Where Reading driving test centre is, how its pass rate compares, what happens on the day and the roads learners find hardest.
Every Pass With Waleed learner takes their practical test at Reading driving test centre. This guide covers where it is, how its pass rate compares, what happens on the day and the roads learners find hardest, from Waleed Nuseir, the DVSA approved driving instructor who prepares automatic learners for it.
Reading driving test centre is at Pacific House, Imperial Way, Whitley, Reading RG2 0TD, near the A33 and junction 11 of the M4. The centre moved there in 2025. The last tests at Elgar Road South ran in March 2025, tests ran from the Holiday Inn Reading South while the new site was prepared, and Pacific House opened on 26 June 2025. Plenty of older websites still give the old Elgar Road South address, so check the address on your test booking confirmation.
Reading test centre's overall pass rate was 55.4% in the year to March 2026, against a national average of 50.0%, according to DVSA's annual car driving test figures. In the year before it was 49.8%. Even at the higher figure, more than four in ten tests at Reading end in a fail.
Every learner Waleed has taken on has passed, and 92% passed first time. The difference comes from preparation: learners are not put forward until they can drive the roads around the test centre calmly without prompts.
The test is the same at every centre in Britain. It takes about 40 minutes, with around 35 minutes of driving, and includes:
You pass with 15 driving faults or fewer and no serious or dangerous faults.
DVSA does not publish test routes, and examiners can use any roads near the centre. Roads close to Imperial Way that learners should be comfortable on include:
These roads appeared on route lists published for the old Elgar Road centre, which is nearby, and they are still the main roads around the new one.
Most learners take the test in their instructor's car. With Pass With Waleed, that is the same 2017 automatic Toyota Yaris used for every lesson, so there is nothing new to get used to on the day. There are marked parking bays at the front of Pacific House, and candidates wait in the ground floor lobby. Bring your photocard provisional licence.
Lessons last two hours, which leaves time to drive out to the test centre roads, practise what went wrong and still get feedback. Before the real test, every learner takes a mock test of the same length and format on the roads around Imperial Way. Lessons start from home, work, college or the train station anywhere Waleed covers, and cost £53 an hour, or £48 an hour in a 10-hour block.
